Medical marijuana dispensary to open this week in Harrisburg

A medical marijuana dispensary is scheduled to open on Wednesday in Harrisburg.

Zen Leaf Harrisburg will open at 137 S. 17th St.

The new dispensary offers a variety of cannabis products including concentrates, infused products, vaporizers, and flower. Registered medical marijuana cardholders can also order online at with same day, in-store pick up.

The new 3,000-square-foot store will be the first of three stores in Pennsylvania for Verano, a multi-state cannabis company based in Chicago, which owns Zen Leaf Harrisburg.

“We’re excited about our Pennsylvania debut, bringing the Zen Leaf dispensary experience to a new and thriving medical market,” George Archos, founder and CEO of Verano said in a press release.

The store is open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday; 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

A few community members expressed concerns last year about building a medical marijuana dispensary on 17th Street when plans for the building were moving through the planning process. However, Harrisburg City Council ultimately approved the plans for the building last December.

Verano has 18 stores in 12 states with more on the way and approximately 440,000 square feet across its cultivation facilities. Verano produces a full suite of cannabis products sold under its brands: Encore, Avexia and Verano.

As for the other two locations in the state, Verano is planning to open a dispensary this month at 890 Loucks Road in York and next month at 590 W. Plank Road in Altoona.

Pennsylvania legalized medical marijuana in 2016, allowing it to be used to treat 17 medical conditions. Last year the list grew to include 23 conditions. Someone with one of the conditions must have it certified by a doctor who is state-approved. Then they can obtain a card enabling them to buy medical marijuana at a medical marijuana dispensary.

The new dispensary in Harrisburg is one of several dispensaries that have opened or will open in the midstate. Numerous companies have opened or will open dispensaries (under the same name or a different name) in central Pennsylvania. Organic Remedies Inc. was awarded permits in East Pennsboro Township and Chambersburg; Lebanon Wellness Center LLC was awarded permits in Lebanon and Gettysburg; KW Ventures Holdings LLC was awarded permits in Steelton, Guilford Township near Chambersburg and in North Middleton Township near Carlisle; Cansortium Pennsylvania LLC was awarded a permit in Penn Township near Hanover; Bay LLC was awarded a permit in in Manheim Township near Lancaster; Harvest of South Central PA LLC was awarded a permit in Harrisburg; Harvest of Camp Hill has opened in Lower Allen Township; Local dispensaries LLC was awarded a permit in Harrisburg and GTI Pennsylvania LLC was awarded a permit in Mechanicsburg.
